UNICA Iron & Steel Logo.png

Unica Iron and Steel is a first of its kind, fully integrated mini steel plant, manufacturing light and medium structural steel from iron scrap.

Established in Babelegi 2006, the company has garnered a reputation for manufacturing quality light structural sections (window sections, square bar and angle iron) commercially.

The company is proudly continuing to pioneer secondary steel manufacture in South Africa through increasing capacity, product innovation and enhancing quality controls to ensure top quality products.

Some of its latest developments are:

  • A new state of the art straight line rolling mill to be commissioned in November 2020 (COVID-19 delayed the April launch).

  • The addition of a LRF (ladle refining furnace), which will allow the company to add special steel range in its products like EN 8, EN 9,
    EN 21, EN 40, etc.

  • Unica is waiting for ESKOM to install power of 10 MVA to its melting department, so it can commission the new furnace which will double its steelmaking capacity to over 220k tons per annum.

  • The company is in the process of acquiring ISO 17025 accreditation and have built a world class inhouse laboratory featuring sophisticated equipment for accurate testing, which will enable Unica to issue the 3.1 certificate to its customers.

Having established itself as a leader in the local South African market for its sections,  Unica is ready to open doors for rest of Africa.
